Ahmadinejad mocks Gates' visit to Afghanistan
Wednesday, 10 Mar, 2010 5:24 pm
KABUL : Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday mocked US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who was in Afghanistan at the same time, questioning why he was in the war-torn country.

Ahmadinejad has repeatedly called on US-led troops to leave Afghanistan, which has close ethnic and religious ties to Iran, while US officials have long accused Iran of maintaining links to insurgents in Afghanistan.

Gates has been in Afghanistan for three days to review a surge of US and NATO troops set to bring their number to 150,000 by August in a last-ditch effort to end eight years of war in Afghanistan.

Gates has said Iran appeared to provide some "low-level support" to militants and "could do a lot more" if it chose to.

Asked about Gates accusing Iran of playing a double game, Ahmadinejad responded: "The question is what are you (Gates and troops) doing here in this region?"

"You are 12,000 kilometres away on the other side the of the world. You are on the other side of the world. What are you doing here? This is a serious question," the outspoken Iranian president said.

"They have created this excuse of terrorism themselves... We think the way to fight terrorism is the through proper intelligence gathering, through respecting nations and to separate people from terrorists," he said.
